I finally got around to rebuild my calipers on my 82 and on the last one I could not get two of the dust seals to seat, they simply pop out.. I thought it might be the dust seal them selves but I had extra’s and it made no difference.. I am making the assumption that this caliper is scrap and not rebuildable? Where is the best place to get a replacement?
Auto Zone or Advance, about 60 bucks exchange and they dont question the expensive cores condition....like broken bleeders.. besides the initial price most stores will have it in stock or one day away without any extra cost for a heavy core sent back and forth tying up your money for days and sometimes weeks....{part of the so called Corvette tax}......
If you are going to replace them, Vette Brakes over in St. Petersburg, Fl. would be my choice. Also I have read posts from some members here that had really good luck with the SS sleeved calipers from Autozone.
Did you try using a big socket the diameter of the seal to so the pressure is even all the way around when you tap them in? Put some tape around the bottom of the socket so you aren't tapping the metal socket against the rubber of the seal. I have read on the forum here that some people use a little silicone RTV around the boot too. I never have had to but it sure won't hurt anything to give that a try too.
Thanks for the suggestions. I did try the socket and honestly I don't know what was holding the dustboot in to begin with. When I went back to the "originals" they would not stay in either. (Not knocking SS Brakes but these were done by SS brakes twice..) These are SS sleeved, and 3 of the four are TIGHT, had to use the socket to hammer them in. This last one (interestingly enough is the only one that was in fact leaking.. + it had some really nasty sludge in it..).
Checked the local Discount Auto and they have the rear for $68 + $15 core charge in stock. I will give that a shot..
That brings me to another question.. Do I get the caliper, then install the "O-Ring" kit or leave it as is???
Buy the original lip seal calipers locally and then buy the VBP O-ring converson kit and install their pistons. Its a cost effective way to get great reliability with your brakes.
