Hey, I am looking for my first C3 Vert, I am familiar with rust issues on the frames, as I have had C2's with issues in the past around the rear trailing arms, but how to you look to see if the Bird cage is solid or not?
That is not something I am familiar with... thanks in advance for the help!!!

Make friends with a knowledgeable NCRS member or reputable C3 mechanic and have them check out a car you are considering before making an offer
You don't mention what year your looking at, but since you said it's a convertible, I know it must be 75 or earlier. On 76-82's you need to check the floors because they had steel floors that are often rusty. This is not a problem with 68-75's, as they have glass floors.
The biggest rust problem on 68-82 bodys is the windshield frame. If the pillars are rusted, you can often see evidence of it by looking through the windshield, at the portion of the pillar that can be seen behind the inner pillar post molding. Look in the area of the VIN tag and down to the cowl and the same area on the right side, too. The top of the windshield frame (the header) is also prone to rust out, but this can't be detected with out removing the stainless moldings, something most sellers would frown upon. If the windshield frame is bad, it costs about $1,800 to $2,000 to fix correctly.
