Default Carpeting under the seats?

My carpet was pretty much toast when I got my car, so I dont have anything to go on for the new carpet install...

Where the seatbelt retractors bolt to the floorpan under the seats...Do they bolt ON TOP of the carpet, or do I remove the carpet in that area, or just what??

Also, in the rear storage area, on the wheel wells... what about the carpet where the shoulder harnesses mount. Leave it or cut out the area where the hardware mounts??

Thanks!
Rob

Well, you know the factory carpet didn't cover all the way under the seat. The aftermarket stuff does. But if you install the retractor on top of the carpet (really, under the carpet would be worse), you'll understand why the factory didn't carpet under the seat.

The belt has a very hard time retracting as designed with the carpet there. I would suggest you go for the way the factory did the install.

Gerry,

Nope, didnt know that. My carpet was pretty much gone so that's why the question. Seems like it'd make sense NOT to have carpet there. What about the rear area where the shoulder belts mount?

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

I had the same dilema with my rugs. My 73 has a plastic cover that goes over the retractor assembly and guides the belt out the side by the door sill. Not sure if yours is the same.

In my case, I bolted the retractor directly to the floor, followed by the cover and then the rug. You will need to cut a slit in the rug at the door sill to allow the belt through as the carpet tucks under the sill plate.

As for the shoulder harness, I put the rug down first and cut a hole in it to allow the retractor bolt to pass through.

Good luck, hopefully your rugs fir better then mine did.

If carpet had to be cut at the factory, it is noted in the assembly instruction manual (AIM). Ditto for sound deadener, etc.

Purchase the AIM for your year. AIMs are worth their cost.
