Default VIN location on the frame......

I am trying to find out what year C3 my buddy has me working on. A little history in case some have forgotten or just joined in. The car has a 77 VIN on the a-pillar, but the body is definitely a 78 or 79. I tried to figure out the engine wiring last night and I can't because I need to know what year it is. So my question is this.....does anyone know of the approximate location of the VIN that is stamped on the frame rails? I crawled under the rear last night and cant find it after the axle on the frame. Mind you, the car is on a trailer for the time being, and I need to know where to look so I can jack it up on the trailer (properly secured to keep from falling off). Please help so I can get on with finishing this thing up!!!

I'm told that it is on the driver's side behind the rear wheel on top of the rail. I say "I'm told", because I went looking for mine and couldn't find it. At very least, you will need a mirror and a flashlight to see/read it.

Left rear on top of the frame rail near #4 body mount. Caution: this is the finest example of a frame stamp I have ever seen. Expect yours to be a little less pristine. White paint added by the owner.

The second stamp in on the top of the frame rail, driver's side, about where your left hip would be if you were in the car. This stamp cannot be seen with the body on the frame.

Good luck.

Here it is on a 78, lines up with the antenna. Gas tank is out, pretty much only way to get a good look.

KapsSA: That is an amazing photo! Would love to see the rest of your '78 if the underside is that clean. Any pics posted?

Thank you all for the replies. Now that I know exactly where to look, I might just be able to find out what year car I am working on!
