Default Will this work? Mirror mount question

Next weekend I have a fibreglass expert coming to do all the repair work on my 1970 vette.

Both side mirrors need the fibreglass redone as over the years it's had more mirror holes drilled than I care to understand why.

What I was thinking of getting done is asking the fibreglass guy to fibreglass a metal plate between the layers so that when the glass is finished off I can drill and tap a thread for the mirrors to mount to.

Will this work? Does anyone have any suggestions or any other better ideas?

Thanks

Allan.

My feeling is there are too many points for failure here. Steel will likely rust and cause big problems. Aluminium will be too soft to hold the threads. Maybe stainless.

THe mirror has been on the side of my car for 39 years, if the glass is fixed correctly and the mirror is installed correctly I would say your good until 2050 or so.

The drivers side door originally had a metal nut plate (a metal plate with 2 nuts welded to it) bonded to it. If your using, stock, chrome mirrors, the plate is repro-ed and you could just buy one and have it bonded in.

The factory never installed passenger side mirrors on 70 Corvettes. These were dealer installed, so there never was a nut plate in the passenger side door. Passenger side mirrors were installed using "wellnuts". Wellnuts work like a dry wall anchor. A wellnut is a rubber grommet with a metal inside thread, when a screw is threaded in to it, it pulls up tight, sandwiching the fiberglass. People have used the wellnuts in the drivers door when the nut plate is missing. If your going to the trouble to install a new nut plate in the drivers door, you could buy one for the passenger side also or you could use wellnuts in both doors.

Thanks for all your replies.

I am aware of the metal strip behind the left mirror, but it'll be gone when all the glass gets cut out and replaced.

I'm also aware that the right side has no strip and of the use of wellnuts.

I was however looking for a better/more guaranteed solution.

New question:

How was the metal strip originally attached at the factory. I might be best off to try and mimic this.
