I've seen that code start with, for example "K" , so we know it not the month, in other words I don't know. As for the 122, no upgrade your car came with the Oyster Cloth interior. I' sure another member will be able to help both of us with the "J" question....tm

The month of production on the trim tag is indicated by a letter.
"A" being first month of production, "B" being second month and so on.
For 1978 the first month of production was September 77, so that's "A".
Like mentioned, "J" is June, but not because it's the letter for June, but because it's the tenth month of 78 production.

KapsSA, I don't believe that is correct unless they changed the formula somewhere along the line.

A=January
B=February
C=March
D=April
E=May
F=June
G=July
H=August
I=September
J=October
K=November
L=December

My car was built around December 13 and has a trim tag code of L13.

To further support that my sequence number is 9472.

And finally, the tank sheet shows an order date of 12/01/71.

First month of 72 production was August 71, which should make December production an "E".
Could your trim tag be lightly stamped and look like an "L"?
As far as I know, all years, at least C3s, used this letter coding for production.
Parts, now, are dated from January as in your list.
Anyway, for at least 78 which the original poster has, the codes are as I stated. I have 4 examples in my garage that verify it.

Maybe it is an E. Very hard to see.

My black79 is a September79 build. Last month of 79 production.
Code is an "N", but unless you really look close, it looks like an "I". Half of the letter is barely there.

Then that's totally different because for early C3's the last month of production is May and June the first month for the next model year.

The letter N would indicate 14 months of production.

As there was in 79
First month of production can vary, for example, 78 is Sept77 where 79 is August78.

Just a quick look shows 74s with 15 months of production.

That is correct the A stands for the first month of production which is September for every year except 1970 (January). And 1975 (October), 1978 (September) and 1980 (October).

Boy I am wrong the majority of production for C3's started in August.

Actually I think you meant A stands for August for every year except those listed above.

Also you can add 1982 as October.

I see you caught that.

OK, from the Black Book...
68 aug
69 aug
70 jan
71 aug
72 aug
73 aug
74 aug
75 oct
76 aug
77 aug
78 sept
79 aug
80 sept
81 aug(St Louis)
82 oct
Each of these months should be "A" for that year.

edit...but not sure about 82 as I think they may have changed the coding in Bowling Green
