Default Speedometer removal question

I'm trying to remove my speedometer/tachometer housing on my 79'. I have everything loose except the speedometer cable and electrical connection. I have the steering wheel off and I removed the two bolts from the steering column bracket in order to lower the steering column to give me enough clearance to get the speedometer housing out but the steering column will not drop down at all, I have tryed prying between the brackets and they move maybe 1/4" at best. I thought the column was supposed to drop down a couple of inchs. What am I missing?

Loosen the 2 bolts on the inside of the firewall for the steering column.Leave the left one in and remove the right one...Open the hood and keep an eye on them....Grab the nut from the right one (outside firewall)and the column will drop to the floor....Make sure the trim plate from under the column is removed first.

Thanks Jeff. That sounds like a plan to me. I'll try it tomorrow evening.

Remove the heat-a/c duct(just yank it...No screws or fasteners), and you can get your hand up there to remove the speedo cable......The trick to that is.....grab the cable,,, and then with your thumb , just push the clip towards the speedo assembly and simply pull the cable......It comes out very easily...Install it the same way...Push the clip and jam it back in.........Pull that cluster out nice and carefully.....It's really a cool pandora's box in there.
