i posted this car before. i was going to bid on it at end of auction since it was a no reserve but the seller cancelled it hours before. i emailed him asking if car sold before end and he said no, but he was afraid it wouldnt go over 30k which it was at and said he couldnt sell for that. i told him thats the chance you take with a no reserve auction. anyway im still interested in it . HERES QUESTION. engine stamp on left looks like it couldnt be done after engine was assembled. i heard thats when factory did it. also # on right is crooked. does this stamp look real? what would you say a fair price for this car is? its item # 180399050189 on ebay. thanks.
Keeping in mind that I don't claim to be an expert, I will say: The size and location of the stampings look OK to me. Of course, with all that paint on the pad, it is impossible to see what the surface looks like, so I wouldn't put out even a relatively uninformed opinion of whether those look like restamps or not. The photo also isn't the greatest, but I know how it can be difficult to get a decent picture of it.
Caveat Emptor on the 32K "original" miles.
The car looks clean and very well restored.
I wish I had the type of expertise you need, as this car is in Easton PA and I will be literally driving through Easton on my way to Carlisle on Friday.

I saw this car too, he has no documentation at all..............NOTHING !!
i dont like the photos of the pad, they are hard to see anything, though the IL at the end of the prefix looks suspect to me & thats the important part showing motor size & horse power. I cant see the broach marks with all that paint on there...........ask for closer more clear photos.........to start, the car looks like a nice resto....though 40K for a non documented, non tri power car seems a bit steep to me, also the very elusive / expensive pollution control items / pump are all missing. I also wouldnt spend a single $1 without seeing the car in person, and or driving it.....& lift checking it, you dont want to make an unreversable mistake !!! My guesstimate would be $30-$35K max, but i like documentation tough call here !!!
I don't see anything wrong with the stamp. I also don't put to much faith in 'documentation' - I actually would feel a little better about the seller not having it, if he was trying to scam you, he could easily buy all the 'documentation' anyone would want on ebay for a grand.
I would look at the casting dates on the block, intake, and in particular the heads, and if they all match up around the build date, then I would feel fairly comfortable about the stamp being accurate.
Also, if only 33k miles, the carb, and alternator should also be original - that's very easy to check.
That is a very nice car, assuming you can verify everything, I would probably offer 33K, and settle in the 35-36K range, that's what it's worth today - IMO.
that ebay seller looks familiar...I think it is a dealer, or that car was listed for sale here...or something...do some searches....i thought i could smell a cod.
I have a similiar car with documentation proving it has 53k original miles on it.
this is a car I bought and said I would never sell bought it in 05, still has original top on it which is still in great shape.
alternator, the rare original carb..etc it's all there! if you want i can post a couple pics of it.
Just put the engine back in which has a fresh .30 over bore, fresh valve job, new cluthc, all new GM repo hoses, etc..everything is new hoses and belt wise, original raido etc is with this car.
let me know
oya all drivetrain is matching also it has the m21 close ratio 4sp and Power steering.
thinking of selling because I need to get started on the restoration of my 58

wow, #297 is realllly early! Looks like a very nice car, but some obvious omissions like smog pump and original carb (seller supplies the number which is not remotely close) affect market value.
