Why a 4spd? I changed mine from auto to a 5spd, it is the best modification I have done to my vette. I used a Tremic TKO500 conversion kit, it comes with everything you need for the change over.
I have done a few autos to 5 speeds. The cost is quite a bit when you add up all the little pieces but I agree the 5 speed is a better choice. You are going to the expense of changing everything over the overdrive is a bonus. PLus there are kits out there that are cheaper than trying to outsource all the parts yourself. I have done it both ways and the kits are a better deal unless you want a bunch of old used parts.
total cost for a change to a muncie includes the trans(rebuilt for $800), pedal assembly($150), shifter($200) bellhouse and clutch($300), boots($40),clutch linkage($100), drive shaft with balancing($350). i'm sure there's things i've forgotten, but $2000 would be a guess. when i changed mine, it was a frame off, so costs and items needed tend to blend together with other jobs.
the hardest part by far is the installation of the pedal assembly. it's bolted to the firewall with 4 bolts that are imposssible to access without pulling the dash and steering column, and wiper door. also the lower shift boot opening in the trans tunnel is cut differently, and a small fiberglass repair will be needed.
it's not a job to be taken lightly, but techniquely there's nothing involved that you can't do without average skills. the results are fun!
