Noticed my carpet was damp yesterday. I did a search and read a few threads here. One showed pulling the right side of the dash apart. I don't have A/C, so can it be removed from the engine compartment by removing the blower motor plate from the firewall, or do I have to get at it from the interior side? Obviously I'm looking for the easiest way to do this. Any pics of how you did it would also be of great help. Not looking forward to this job. Also where did you get a replacement that fit correctly?
Thanks, Guys!
Glenn
I just finished replacing mine. Mine is an A/C car, so I had to go from the inside of the car. Just do a Google search, there is all kinds of info on the net for this project. I got my replacement from NAPA. It fit fine.
Paul74's link was just what I was looking for. Looks easy enough but messy.

I've never tried removing the core from the engine side. Paul showed a manual in his link , I don't know if he read it because he didn't follow the instructions from the manual. He got to step 4 and took a wrong turn maybe. The distributor box he refers to is actually the box inside that "distributes" the air from floor to defrost and vents. The outer box that he calls the distributor box is the blower box or module.
Your car is a 70 and his link was a 79. Check your service manual.
Be careful I think you might have to force some things to get the core out that way.
I used this as guidance when I replaced mine in the 70 last year. Yes you can pull it through the engine bay, and there is very little in the way. The removal took about 45 minutes and the install took about an hour.
Take what I showed in the pics and give it a try. No harm done in removing that outer cover (10 minutes). The core just sits there with the clips shown. If you are not happy with pulling it that way, this other pic of my 1974 with A/C shows you an 8-10-hour option. I've done both. Your choice.
Did I a read a manual? Did I miss a step (what is #4)? No, I took advice from a Forum member in 1999 when this site had ~3,000 members. The pics speak for themselves. I do not post BS***.

I read the chassis manual procedure and though they describe the removal from the interior, I'm going to try it from the engine bay side. Looks very easy and much quicker. I'll be getting the core tomorrow to install & I'll take pics and post them of the procedure to let you know how it turned out. I appreciate all the suggestions you guys gave me. It's been very helpful.

Hope it goes good , I'm always open to a new time saver.
My understanding has always been that if you have A/C then the heater core must be replaced from the inside. If it is a non-A/C car it can be done from the engine compartment.
I have an A/C car with a core starting to leak. I have looked at the info for doing it from the inside and looked under the hood. I'm going from the inside. Wish me luck.

Be glad you own a coupe , a convertible is much harder to do. Good Luck

Thanks! Going out to start on it now so when I pick up the core later it'll be ready to install. One question is where are the clips located? Top, bottom or sides. Chassis manual & AIM doesn't show this in detail.

On the ends-right and left as you look down and in. One is in between the inlet tubes-- thats the one that I see being a possible pain to get in and out. Some years they are not clips they are held down by 1/4 inch screws.

Hi Glenn, I dont want to tell you your business but I seriously would recommend , like a Donnybrook 70 said that you test the new one before you install it, I've had new (from G.M. too) ones leak, unfortunately found out after the job was finished, or so I thought. Good luck,,,Peace, Moosie
