I'm just about ready to spray my seal coat of epoxy prime/seal, and was wondering if there is a rule of thumb for epoxy time curing before the base/clear. The product says 5 hrs to sand,(nothing specific about re-coat) but I have heard of problems with re-coating epoxy too quickly. I have been told anywhere between over night to 5 or 6 days, and thats a pretty wide range.
I just did mine and used an epoxy sealer and it said leaving too long would be more of a probloem. I came back over the same day but I was using lacquer paint.
I used PPg epoxy sealer and the dealer and the label said spray right away. Actually it calls for one coat then come right backl and paint...assumes you have perfectlysanded already. I had sanding primer on it already but it was on there a few years (some restorations take longer ) so it needed to be reprimed and I wanted a sealer so I wouldn't have to risk the lacquer soaking in and eventually upsetting the fiberglass. I went ahead and did two coats within the same hour so I had something there in any spots I needed to light sand. The dealer said come back over and paint in an hour and the primer specs recommends not leaving it a long time, I assume because you have that much more chance to contaminate with whatever, fingerprints, spilled drinks . after the second coat i light sanded a couple small spots then shot the first of the lacquer right away.
