Default Vibration.

Drove the 76 a little today about 60 miles or so.

Its a 76 4spd and I'm hunting a vibration.

Smooth under 50 bad at 60 and a little better at 70.

Mostly in the shifter, I can feel it a little in the wheel.

Where would you start?

U-joints? I just put on new tires so thats most likely out.

U-jounts first, just because of the potential damage. Then I would look at the tires again. I just had a weight come off not too long ago.

Yea, I think I will pull the drive shaft today and check all the half shafts to.

Checked the weights look good. Also checked the water pump, had a bad bearing one time made it vibrate but went up with rpm. This is only at speed.

Also have a little tapping sound/feeling in the car, not bad but just started when the vibration got worse. Might be clutch, but I hope not!

At least I have several other toys to drive!!

i had a long thread on this.... ended up being several problems, not just one. But the two major culprits were 1. drive shaft alignment was about 80%, and 2. flywheel was out a little, the other 20%.

I had a vibration problem that would start around 3500 rpm and get worse as the revs increased. The shifter would buzz, it would transmit through the whole car. I checked everything and couldn't find anything. Then I needed to change the water pump and discovered that the fan hub had elongated bolt holes and that the fan & fan clutch were off center causing the vibration. I would never have considered this as the source. Now no more vibration.
Good luck with this as it can be frustration to track down.

Yea I read that whole thread....man what a pain in the as$. Im glad you got it fixed.

I will have to check those two things.

Its up in the air now so there's no turning back "jack stands scare me to death".

Think I will pull the rear all the way down and be done with it, did a fiber spring and new shocks a few years ago and should have pulled the shafts/ujoints and all the bushings back then...live and learn.

As for the water pump y-not Its old and I have nothing to loose.

Glad I have my 79 bronco to pimp when Im working on the vette, you allways need a backup classic to drive!!!

dont forget to look at the fan clutch shaft and see if you have any wobble in that shaft/bearing

Well the cars been off the road for a couple of months.

I replaced all the ujoints, that did not fix it.

I did find the problem anyone want to guess what the problems was?

If you guess bent rim you are a winner.

I took my spare off and swaped the rims and tires. Fixed, ran 90 today no vib!!!!!

Also found that my spare is a original wide O thats never hit the ground!
