Just a quick question on what other people have done on there set up to wire wheel. I have wire cups normally used with low speed, or I have high speed wire wheels. Just wondering what you have used in the past. What worked, what did not ?
I use high speed wire wheels. Larger wheels on an electric grinder and smaller wheels on a pneumatic die grinder. Just remember to ware eye protection.
I was wire wheeling one of my a-arms and one of the bristles came off the wheel and went through my jeans. Don't worry though my left nut stopped it!! ouch!
For most of the brushing, I would use a 2-3/4" or 3-1/2" Knot Cup brush carbon steel.014 wire on a mini grinder. Your best bet is to use a USA made brush as the wire quality is much better. Only the tips cut on a wire brush and if you have to push to hard because you got a crimped wire or fine wire brush and lay the bristles over they will break very quickly as the wire fatigues.
If you can buy a Advance Brush or a Milwaukee Electric Tool as they are USA. Dewalt's are imports as are most of the ones you will find in a hardware store such as Vortec.
All that being said I sent mine out for sand blasting and powder coat and highly recommend it.
I happened to catch a sale at Harbor Freight on a 40 lb sandblaster for right around 100 bucks. That thing works so sweet. In fact I am doing my frame this weekend. I tried the wire wheel and it does work but takes allot more time.
