The passenger door on my 78 would not open with the outside or inside handle. I took the interior panel off, and with screw driver, I can push down on the tab of the latch mechanism to get the door open.
My question is: can the latch be repaired, or do I have to spend $129 on a new (or rebuilt) latch? Also, how do you get the latch out (or the window gear as well)? Does the metal inside panel come off?
Do you have the assembly instruction manual (AIM)? Sounds like the latch rod might be off. AIM has a diagram of the set up, including installation of the latch.

Yeah, I need to dig in some boxes to find my AIM (after a move). I couldn't remember if the AIM had that or not. I know the old Clymer doesn't even come close to it...
Interesting that neither inside or outside handles work since if it was a rod, then both would been to be off. On the lock assembly there should be a rod from the inside latch connected to an arm and the rod from the lever assm. (the locking rod and power locks)
Found my AIM last night. Question: Does the inside panel come off? If not, how the heck do you get parts (latch and window) in and out?
Gerry80, neither the outside handle nor the inside handle work, but the rods appear to be attached properly. I can also see the rod move when the key is turned in the lock. It appears that the spring loaded mechanism doesn't pivot to unlatch unless I take a screwdriver and push down on the tab.
Now that I have the manual, I'll take a second look. I've had the driver side interior panel off before and may take it off again to compare.
