Default Rear defroster for convertible?

I had no idea any conv came with a factory rear window defroster, was there a little heated blower back in there?

Optional on all the cars from 1968 on. No breakdown of numbers of coupes versus convertibles. Here is the setup on my '75 convertible.

There was no heat, just a blower. Didn't work too well on either the coupe or convertible.

Steve,
Thank you. I have never seen of those units. I learn something new every day here. But to avoid damage I do not move my top under 50*F. It's now up for the winter.

Supposed to be available on the '68 convertibles and is shown in the AIM, but it's my understanding none of the '68 convertibles could get it.

Is there a seperate switch, or does it come on with normal defrost? I have that vent on my deck too, did all verts have that?

Switch is located by the driver's right leg on the side of the console. The vent was only added if the vert had the defroster option.

Rear Window Defroster option uses a round metal **** that has 2 positions, a high and low. Turn **** forward for 1 speed and backward for another speed. Off is in middle position. The blower sends ambient air from cockpit up thru ductwork to rear window on coupe and convertibles. It works, not real efficiently though.

So that's what that mystery switch is! I have the switch on the console but no connections going to it. I have the vent on the deck but no ducting or motor. I guess my system disappeared at some point. I was thinking that switch was from some bubba addition from the past like fog lights or something, good thing I kept the switch, although I doubt this system is easy to come by to replace it.

On later cars, it is a black plastic toggle. Two position, high-off-low.

Justed walked down to the garage. Here is the switch on a '75.

Yep, that's the one. I just checked and mine does have the duct. I guess I never noticed it!

Default Required Equipment

Around 1970, New York required the rear defroster option on cars sold in that state. That meant a lot of cars that went to the Northeast had the rear defroster installed so the dealers could trade cars.
My 1972 air-cond LT1 coupe had the defroster. It was sold out of the Boston district office. May have been a COPO car.
