Default side grill paint question

I bought a set of side grills that have an excellent coat of new paint on them.

The thing is this , the chrome was not taped over and there is none showing.

I knew this when I bought them.

I assume that these are normally taped off before painting.

Are there any magic tricks to get the paint off w/o makng a mess?

Or is this a case of accept it as is or start all over.

Thanks
David

David,

Do you want to just expose the chrome edges, or do you want to strip the entire piece???

You can probably expose the chrome edges with a very sharp (new) razor blade or exacto knife, carefully scrape the tops of the chrome edges, removing the layer of paint.

If you want to strip the entire part, use a good quality paint stripper, let it do the work. It will probably take several applications. Then you can either rechrome the entire piece and paint it, or if the chrome looks OK, tape off the tops of the chrome edges and repaint the piece.

Thats how I did mine.

Note...not all side grills were painted the same. On my 72, all the chrome edges (vertical and horizontal) were exposed. On earlier models, only the horizontal edges were exposed....

Thanks Rob

The grills have a great white paint job. That is the color of my car.

My wish would be to remove just enough to expose the chrome on the vertical and horizontal edges.

My car is a 71 model.

Thanks again

David

This is essentially what I did on mine. I used a sharp blade and first cut the edges so the top would come off without chipping any of the sides. It probably took less than an hour to do both grilles.

1970 had the grilles with only horizontal chrome showing. It is a different casting that doesn't have the raised ridges like the later models, so it is easy to tell just by looking at them.
