Default Dyno Day

Things take on a whole new meaning when your not tuning for HP alone. We spent the whole day tuning for driveability and fuel economy. The Edelbrock carbs work real well in this application. The cool thing about the engine dyno, is you can simulate the load on the engine as if you were driving it down the hwy at a certain rpm etc. We were able to detect a lean surge and correct it. Friday will be a full blown dyno test for tq and hp. So far at 5300 we have 330 HP and 372 tq. Will buzz it to 6000 and see where we end up. Bottom line will be close to 340 hp and 380 tq. Will be a nice setup. Will post the dyno sheet tomorrow night.

Saw a second crate motor dyno sheet similar to mine but he had a 1-3/4 header as opposed to the 1-5/8 tube i have. that one made 366 hp and 390 tq. So looks like a bigger header will make a bit of difference.

when i separated the high & low plane, it had a surge at cruise. so i turned up the idle speed in my driveway to the surge rpm, 2400. choked it to rule out vac. adv. and the surge smoothed out. Had to richen the primary jets TWICE on my 4165 holley to cure the surge.
MPG went up to 18-19 from 11
i wouldn't do this on a dyno, but, i'm glad it worked for you. did it simulate mpg? even if it did, real world driving is more fun!

It cost me $600.00 to put the motor on and off the dyno, and a day and a half of tuning. We broke in the camshaft and put the rings through several heat cycles to help seat them, worth every penny. Plus the info we gathered to get the fuel curve correct was worth it.
