Scary story. How many of us have undocumented cars? I would say, most of us. What if you found out your vette was stolen 30 or more years ago? The vette in this story was fully restored!
I have no reason to believe mine was ever stolen, but I know it has had many owners and I know only the last 3 or 4. One reason not to broadcast your vin over the internet.
yes really sad too, that the lawsuits that are sure to happen , will have to go back many years and many owners to resolve this... somebody is out 65000 $$$ for something they had no idea of...
If I presented my title for transfer in good faith to the DMV and they found nothing wrong, and then I sell my car and the new owner does the same thing, only for the dmv to find the problem, causing my total loss or a non winable lawsiut against me.. what happens then... all due to faulty procedures or loopholes at the DMV..
I agree the car has to go back to its original owner.. but for the DMVs to title this car for several owners in the past is just ludicris..... makes me scared about any classic car that has had many owners.
when I bought my car I called the state dmv where I bought it, they said it was a good clear title... but really how much should I trust that something was not wrong several owners ago.. or the title was not washed.....

yes, that is a great story, glad it was recovered......
I also had a Vette stolen in 1989, a 75 Vert that was parked in front of my house wedged between 2 cars that were tight up against the front & rear, they pulled it out sideways loaded it up and off they went. Sad thing is I had dropped the insurance a week before, to save some $$$ and put it away in the garage after some cement work was completed.
Good news is I still own that Vert and have the title to it. It still is in the National system as being stolen and I have to have it re-entered every 5 years to keep its status current.
When I read a story like this, it gives me hope, who knows, someday that story may be about me.............................Tom
I am the 3rd owner of a 77 widebody daytona greenwood car. The 1st owner was a guy we will call JR. The second owner was his wife who was given car in divorce court. JR was a body/paint man that did excellent work and this car won many shows. When his ex recived car she made it a daily driver to **** him and his friends off. After nearly 10 years of daily driving she posted car in newspaper for sale and I purchased it. In restoration process I often drove it to get bugs out and while at a local barber shop a note was left on the car saying, ''I am the orginial owner and know all the history of this car. If you ever have questions contact me. So I did and JR offered to help me complete restro, by doing a custom candy paint job similar to the metal flake one he had years ago. After car was at his home for a month I noticded no work was done to car except some small area hand sanded and I had paid him nearly $500.00 to start work. When I told another vette owner about car he laughed and said JR will keep your car and post a lien on it. He knew all about JR and his shady dealings including in 1977 when JR took the car with only 12 miles on it and drove it under his pick up truck to the damage of nearly 6000.00 to cover the cost for the daytona kit thru the insurance co. When I went to JR to get my car he told me I could not have it because he was still workig on it, I told dont worry about the 500, just give me my car. The car was blocked in by 3 other cars and upon calling the police JR fled the scene-due to outstanding warrants, his new wife moved the other cars and I got my vette back. To this day nearly 12 years later sometimes I still worry about JR coming back and trying to steal my vette but now with several pics, alarm system, fencded in back yard with dogs, and a lo-jack I think I am a lot more safer. Funny thing is all the kids in my neighbor hood I fear them even more because its always some curious teen with a need for speed that wants to joy ride and meet a tree.
