Default Steering Wheel

Good Day everyone! My question is simple. I would like to switch out the Steering Wheel on my 1976 Corvette Stingray. I just do not like the looks of the one on there that came on the car. It looks rather cheap to say the least. However, after looking through a variety of numerous catalogs to find a replacement there seems to be none to be found for my year of vehicle! Rats! Is there anyone out there who could possibly point me in the right direction with either a sight or company that sells off brand Steering Wheels for my year, make and model of vehicle? Thank you all in advance for your assistance. I really am looking forward to communicate with all of you in the future. Cheers! ~John L

In 76 they used the Vega steering wheel. From what i understand you need to switch the entire steering colum out. I have the same thing and don't really care for it.

You can put any standard 6 bolt steering wheel on your car. You need to use an adapter. NGK makes a short one out of billet. Momo makes one that looks way worse but is longer. You will lose the telescoping feature if you install one. Check out Momo wheels. They have some really nice ones. You will need to trim the top of your shaft to make the horn work most likely. You also need to solder a wire to the old horn contacts and lock the telescoping shaft with a hacked off bolt with a straight screw slot in it.

You do not have to replace your steering column. The bare steering column (whether it is a standard non-adjustable column or a T&T) is exactly the same as the 1969 through 1975 vintage columns. Unfortunately, you didn't mention if you have a standard column or a T&T.

You can fairly easily install a 1969-75 narrow rim, three spoke wheel to either a 1976 standard or a T&T column. If you have a T&T you also have the option of installing the leather wrapped 1977-82 steering wheel. You will have to obtain a hub, extension, steering wheel, telescope locking parts, and horn parts.

Go to www.corvettefaq.com

Click on Corvette Steering Papers
Scroll down to just about the very end of the listing of papers.
You will find a number of papers in word.doc or in pdf formats.
You will find papers on installing 1969-75 steering wheels on a 1976 column.
You will also find papers on installing 1977-82 steering wheels on 1976 steering columns.
The papers include all of the part numbers you will need to purchase in order to make the installations.
Download them for a good evening's reading.
