Default 1972's

I was looking at a 1972 last night. It looks like the hood is an LT-1 hood. The hood had the chrome inserts that are divided in the middle, no stripes around the scoop, but the hood also had 454 on each side down by the chrome strips.
Was this correct? Is there anyway to tell if this car was an original big block?

The VIN will tell you what it came with originally.. if the 5th character is a 'W".. its a big block

That exactly what I wanted... and easy to check! Thanks for the info. Now, is the radiator and fuel lines different for a big block? Any other tale-tell signs to look for?

Yes. Correct for big block cars. The LT-1/BB hoods are the same with the exception of the numerals/stripes.

So the hood scoope chrome trim (in the pocket of the scoope) is supposted to be divided for LT1 and BB ? BB will not have the stripes, but will have the 454 emblems?

Also, This 1972 is a coupe. The seat belts went through a hole in the metal strip on the back of the seat. My '75 coupe does not go through the metal stip on the back of the seat, it goes around the back of the seat and mounts to the halo side. I found this interesting also.

Yes

Yes.

LT-1 will have stripes and letters for LT-1, but will not have numerals. A genuine LT-1 hood will not have evidence of prior holes for mounting the 427/454 numerals.

Rear end will have bolt on caps instead of straps, if it's an air car, from what I remember it will have a tubular, not round like the sb version overflow tank on the inner fender. Just my 2 pennies.

Big blocks also have a 9/16" rear sway bar.
If it is a big block A/C car it is supposed to have a special cooling fan with "finger tips" that stick out past the fan shroud.

The alternator should be a model number 1100544, the starter a model number 1108400, the carb a 7042217 (manual trans) or 7042216 (auto trans).

Don't forget about checking the tach red line and of course, the console data plate... and even the emissions sticker.

The question is, what's UNDER the hood? Are you saying it's an NOM?
