Thanks again for the advice. So heres where I am at. I have the headers off (for chemical wash), oil pan off (to clean out), and pretty much just the block sitting on my stand. From here, what kind of things should I be checking?? I mean, while I am here, I might as well check for common 350 problems, i just dont know what they are!! Ha, again thanks everyone.
If you can get a harmonic balancer puller, remove the balancer and timing chain cover to ck. or chg. timing chain prob. chg.. Also timing chain cover seal and gasket. If you turn over engine now lifters will fall out and they need to go back where they originally came from. I would make 16 holes slightly smaller than the size of the lifters in the side of a cardboard box, mark front of box to correspond to front of engine and store lifters in holes so you can get them back in their original bores. Check bottom of lifters they should be slightly convex if they are concave they and cam may need to be replaced. I have not seen where you posted how far you want to go with rebuild. Others will give ideas too. mds...
Well mds, I would probably like to just finish the whole engine rebuild since I am so deep into it now anyway. The problem is, that I can take the thing apart and put it together a million time no problem, but I don't know what problems I am looking for. I'm gunna pull the cylinders outof the block and bring it to a local machine shop to get hot tanked, but seeing the engine only has 37k orginal miles on it, I don't know if new pistons and valves are nessacary. My goal is to be completely rebuild and chasis sandblasted by may. That's when my ship deploys and I leave for 6 months. So as for as rebuilds/cleans, what do you recomend??
Roger - noted and moved.
Biggest question is what do you want to gain from all this? Keeping it pure stock at the original HP or do you want to increase the power of the engine? Lots can be done but more you gain the more you spend.
RIO - my goal is 100% stock. Nothing else. I am just trying to fix things to look nice so that this could be considered a nice restro.
Dan - I am currently on christmas leave right now. I get back on the 8th and we go u/w to mayport not long there after. I will try and get in contact with you soon.
