Default check engine light on

OK here is one for all of you
Today for the first time the check engine light came on in my 1982.
Here is the kicker. It came on and stayed on after I turned the car off and got out. I and my step son saw it through the window..
Now it seems to have stopped. I turned the car off and stayed in the car for a few minutes. the dome light went out and the engine light stayed off. I did this again and it stayed off. So I turned off the car and opened the door,, locked it and shut the door and waited. No light.
What do you all think????

THE LIGHT WAS ON THIS MORNING!!!!!OK!!!!
New info.
When I pull the int light fuse the engine light went out and then with the fuse still out and the door open the engine light cam on. When I shut the door it goes out. So now I will go to the schematics and see what I can come up with but any help or insight would be appreciated.

NEW DEVELOPMENT.

I have not dealt with the old gm computers for awhile so I dont remember which pin that needs grounded out to put the computer into the light flashing diagnostic mode but I would check to see if it will flash out a failure code first. Hopefully someone will chime in soon to tell you which pin on the computer terminal to ground out to flash out the code. Atleast you are getting a bump on the thread.

I assume the key is out and everything is turned off. If thats the case I think your plug on the back of the circuit board (center cluster) has shifted a bit and power is being routed to the light. Do any of the guges go wacky when this happens?

I don't think its a code issue. The engine light should not go on if the key is not in the on position.

Default No key

That is correct. There is no key in the ignition when this happens. I am out of the car and it is locked like I am not coming back to it. I have a code reader so maybe I will hook it up for S&G's and see what it gives me. i posted on the crossfire injection vault so maybe those guys will have an idea with that particular ECM. Thanks for the replies.

When its on try pulling the Gages fuse. See what happens. Hopefully nothing because that should not be live if the key is out.

Then pull the CTSY-CLK fuse. This circuit is hot at all times. It controls the interior lights etc. see if that makes it go out. It shouldn't. If it does there is a cross over somewhere.

That light is feed through the pink/black strip from the gage fuse and Brown/white strip to the ECM.

I guess it also could be the connector at the ECM. Plug 419 on connector 451.

Strange one!!Go through all three fuses. You can try pulling the CTSY-clk or INST LPS or Gages fuse. Does your dimmer function work?

Default Same problem here

Did you make any progress in locating the cause of the check engine light. Mine is doing the same thing. It either stays on when I turn off the engine and remove the key or it goes off and later comes on while the car is unattended. The check engine light is OFF while the car is running
