Default Waiting on destiny...........

Ok, here's the situation.......

I got a line on a shop. The problem is, the guy that told me about the deal gave me VERY different information than the guy that was going to rent it to me. Bottom line is, I need $3,000 by Monday to open the shop.

A guy said he would PROBABLY be by to buy my Corvette. If he does, I'll be open by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, I got a job offer making $80K ......in Afghanistan. I need to give them an answer by Monday as well. I'll be gone for a year with a two week mid-tour leave after six months.

So now my life hinges on hearing from a guy to see if wants to buy my car. We already started to plan on me leaving since my luck with people coming through on things like this is not good. Next week will be too late for the car, it has to go RIGHT NOW. If it doesn't, I'll be dodging i.e.d.'s and bullets for a year. The job? Recovery mechanic. If a vehicle gets disabled on a convoy, I have to fix it or drag it back to the FOB. (forward operating base) I've been shot at before plenty, that doesn't bother me. Being away from the girls for a year does. The great thing is, we could buy a house the day I get back with 50-75% down and almost NO mortgage. If I die over there, the family could have a house sooner. (six figure life insurance policy)

Either way, it's a risky deal. I just have to wait and see what happens. This is going to be the longest weekend of my life.

Wow, I'm not a patient person. Sitting and waiting, just isn't me. I've always lived by the rule: There are 2 kinds of people, those that make things happen, and those that watch things happen. Of course, this can apply somewhat to your situation. The guy coming to buy the car? Don't hold your breath, I've been in that chair more than once. As far as the job? That's your call.
Good Luck with what you do!

What's the most important thing in your life? Money or your girls.
IMO 80K is nowhere near enough to be away for a year.

Why not try getting a loan against your vette and open your shop? Rolling advertising and a business write off too...

I know you probably checked into this, but does the life insurance pay if you're in a war zone? I also had a chance to talk to a few guys after they came back from Iraq working for Blackwater. They said the money promised could theoretically be made in a year, but, in practice, it was tough to max out because of travel time, etc. Good luck.

I've already done this before. I can walk into theater with one dollar an walk out with the same dollar one year later. It takes discipline though. I set up an allotment for $1,500 per month to go to the wife's account to pay bills. (She also works) the rest goes into a savings account that can't be touched until I get back. I saved $30K in 7 months before.

A loan is out of the question. I have to make a move one way or the other Monday morning. The landlord of the shop is going to list the property for sale with a realtor. Once it's listed, it's over.

The life insurance is through the company. It will pay off if something bad happens.

One day down and no word. I think I'm taking a trip. Jobs aren't that easy to come by. Alot of shops closed last year. That makes ownership better, and trying to find a job worse. Not enough employers for all the employees out there.

Don't let the landlord scare you, he'll gladly rent it to you for less money when you get back. It's a screwed up economy, for him and for anyone trying to open a shop too.

Best of luck to you and yours.

To go over seas for just a Little bit of money with a big chance that
your family want ever see you alive again is the worst Ideal you will
ever have. If you stay here in the states and find work you will be giving
your family a better deal, They get to keep you (alive).

I have a few friends that have done the civilian thing over in the middle
east and when they came back their lives were completely changed with
worse finical problems and their wifes being involved with other men.
One of them was in a none war zone were there was not much going on
and only made it six months before he decided to come home to stay.

Any how I could go on about that some more but don't need to, 80,000
is no a whole lot of money when your putting your life in danger.

Ask your family what they would like to have YOU or the life insurance
policy, Hopefully they will say you.

Sorry just my thoughts.

Riggs.

Typically I steer well away from these threads; however today, I cautiously will add my .02 for your consideration.

Do you really believe your future and your life is pre-determined? That's destiny! Frankly, I don't buy that.

You need to sit down with your wife and discuss your options. I'm willing to bet that you currently have more options than the two you mention.

First thing you should do is drop the deadline.
Second thing you should do is evaluate your role to your family. If you think that the money is the sole contribution; then this comment will be viewed as some rant, and will mean nothing to you. Put your girls needs on the table for evaluation.

Having lost my mother early in her life to cancer, I will add one consideration that has stood true to me; the impact on my family life is paramount when any major decision has been necessary. And there have been several.

I trust you and yours will be happy with your final decision.

All the best,

Dan

i was gonna say take the 80k for a year and save up... but since there is family, i say stay and so what you have to do to get up an rolling.

as for the 2 guys that are involved with the 'deal', sounds like they might be trying to take you for your money. do you have anything in contract/signed form? if so, then they can't do anything but not give you the space.

i would search around for another space and start out smaller. as in shop, are you talking about millwork/autobody/etc?
