How old is your battery? Mine had to be charged after sitting for a while and it was getting very hot. I just went and got a new battery...no more problems.

Make sure battery water level & cable connections are good.
Battery 4 years old normally needs replacing.

If bad cell, it would not be expected to go to 12.3V.

If it stinks it is bad. 4 years is enough sounds like you are due for a new one anyway. The problem sounds like a bad battery. You can have good volts and still have a bad battery.

I think I found the problem negative connection (female?) looks to be loose in the case I charged it got it to start 14.3 or so at the battery. it is one of those Duralast 7 year battery. I think I'm going to swap to a top post sure will make access easy

I use the Optima red top battery, top post. When I know I'm not going to drive for a few weeks I put it on my Battery Tender trickle charger to keep it topped off. Works great, my .02 worth.

I have seen one come loose. I started using dual post batteries & carrying an adapter to use a top post if needed.
