I don't buy and sell cars regularly, so i don't have much experience with shipping companies. I decided to go with a carrier (who shall remain nameless for now) who i thought was reputable and well known. I'm paying about 1600 bucks to have a car shipped 3/4 of way across the country; which seems to be the going rate (called a few different places). Tuesday was 2 weeks from the day the car was picked up. I know the driver stopped at one of the satellite offices where the car sat for about a week. It is supposedly on its way now, coming from about 12 hours drive away, but i think there are at least a couple stops before they get to me. Last I spoke to them they said thursday or friday which if that turns out to be the case it will be about 2 1/2 weeks from orign to destination (since tomorrow is thursday and i haven't heard from the driver i suppose Friday would be the earliest).
Question ... I don't do this enough to know what to expect, but this seems like an awful long time. What is the normal time one could expect to have a car delivered from coast to coast? I have tried to be patient, but getting impatient now. I'm going to try to beat them up on price if i can due to the inconvenience. Not sure how much I'll be able to get them to discount. Good thing is i didn't pay up front...left a credit card that they said would be billed after delivery.
You will lose....if, you try to beat them up, not pay or withhold funds for delivery. They simply will not unload the car. One week is the usual time line CA to MD...3,000 miles. $1,600 is the going rate. Add in weather, car shows in the area...expect delays. Be patient a few days longer...pay the driver, if, all is as promised and let it go....
I could tell you horror stories all day long about shippers and what I've been through. But, the car is close and I would advise you to stick with it. PM me if you like, and we can talk further.
Without a doubt others will chime in....but, its not their monies nor car, so take that with a grain of salt. Here's hoping the car comes soon and to your liking......
Thanks...getting the car safely is most important. When i say "beat them up" on price, my intention is more like politely insist and hope for the best. Hopefully if they want my repeat business then they will work with me ...otherwise I'm not going to go to bat over a possible few hundred dollars if the car is okay. if they won't work with me then just means I probably would not use them again.
Sounds like this is definitely longer than average, but not way off base given all the variables involved.
My experience with having cars shipped is to expect them to take a few days longer then what they say. If if shows up on time or earlier, consider it a gift. With that being said, I just received one on Monday that left CA 8 days earlier.
You may want to take into consideration that Barrett Jackson and Russo Steele just finished and Mecum is getting ready to start. This is probably impacting most carriers.
The only experience I have with shipping was with Horseless Carriage. Was a great experience - the driver left me his cell phone # when he picked the car up, and let me know where he was en route. He was a day or so late, but I was in contact with him so it was really no big deal.
Yes Sir; I have to tell you all I was so lucky, Murphy Auto Transport 417-273-0021 Theodosia, Mo. Did exactly what he said he would do. Paid him when he got here. His office let me know where he was at, at all times, before he picked the car up and after, until it was at my door. Have a great one. Gene
