Default Rally Rim Paint

I'm looking into painting my '74s rally rims the original colors and need help figuring out what paint to go with. I haven't been able to find anybody that sells the paint by the pint or the quart, so I'll have to use a rattle can. What rally rim paint have you guys used, and how did you like it? Also, whats the correct paint for them? I think there are two different colors because on some of them it says that for 73-74 it's for replacement style wheels.

Argent Silver....most of the Corvette supply houses carry it in the spray can...Shop around and get the best price. As always for best results... prep is everything. I don't mind telling you what I can do with a spray / rattle can. If, you know how to use them...you will be very, very pleased with the final results. Be sure to remove all the moisture from the wheels prior to spraying. Depending on your capabilities, you can achieve this by baking them and or using a small torch. You will see the moisture dissipate...right in front of your eyes.

If you have a local place that deals with Camaro/Chevell parts check there, probably cheaper
Last time I did this, I used a small can I picked up at Dyer's Camaro/Chevelle parts in Stockton, one can did all four wheels

Was the outside of the rim the only part that was painted, and the rest was black?

Yes. The back of the wheels were painted black first, the the outside was painted with the argent silver. Also the holes were not covered up when the outsides were painted and there was overspray on the black.

Yes, backside of rim would be a flat back...w/ a slght silver overspray through the lightening holes on to the black. That correlates into ....Spray the back side first and then spray the front (silver) last.

Sray in tune...

Yes. I had my wheels bead blasted, then I first painted the backs a semi-gloss black, and the fronts silver.

Another option is powder coating. Maas Brothers is just down the road from where I work, believe there's a shop in Hayward also. I was in there before the holidays, and noticed about 30 different shades of silver(some were closer to grey), I'm sure one of those shades has got to be close. Powder coating wheels has become a popular option, so they would likely have the correct shade

You forgot to mention.... that it will cost the OP 10 times the cost to do a good spray paint.

I just paid 20 bucks a wheel to have them powder coated. Only trouble is that the whole wheel is now Argent.

I'm gonna go down to mt local paint store and ask them if they have the paint. They switched over to water based paints only out here in the Bay Area, so it's hard to get some colors. If I can't find the paint I'm just going to have to order a couple of rattle cans and spray away. I'm gonna make sure I prep the wheel really good before I paint them.

So which one is the correct PPG code; 8586, or 8568?

Spray can paint is not that durable nor thick. The shine doesn't typically last very long either (maybe not a problem with a corvette that is mostly garaged). I always spray rims using a decent aotomotive-grade paint (out of a can) mixed with urethane hardner. If need be, I may add a little flattening agent. But you have to be set up with the equipment to do paint work... Otherwise, spray can or powder coat is you best bet.
