Default 81 interior

hey guys i need to replace my oil gauge. i took the 2 screws out the top and the two screw on the side out but the center cluster wont budge. i rear somewhere there are two screws on the bottom. how do you get to them? remove the side panels? how do you remove the side panels?

Here's how I did it:
There are two screws/tabs at the bottom of the panel, to get to them I removed the carpeted side panels, three screws on each side of the panels, to get to the rear screws on the panel (by the e brake console) I removed both seats, 4 bolts each seat. While your in there think about replacing the lightbulbs and anything else broken, and cleaning up in there. I'm sure there are other ways to get in there but that's how I did.

Good grief, I want to install LED bulbs in those instruments, but I am not prepared to go through that! lol

ok here is how i did it. i unscrewed the front screw for the side panels. i slowly pulled them back to allow for enough room to get my hand in there. i used a stubby screw driver to unscrew the bottom two screws. i didnt have to take the seats out but you have to be careful not to damage the side panels. mine are cardboard.

I can take my side panels off without seat removal. Use a small screwdriver, push the bolsters down and you can get to the rear screws for the side panels. while you are at it you can pull the console and clean under it. There is a bolt under the ashtray. After you get the side panels off you will see the small screws on the front are decorative, and you will find the proper ones to get the instrument cluster off.
