Even if it is a real trim tag and one of the original black cars - so what? Would anyone pay more for it? Not me.

One can only wonder when an owner removes the tag for whatever reason. Here is my take on it. The current owner removed all the chrome in preparation for paint. I do not believe he is trying to sell the car under false pretense, nor is he misrepresenting the car. He purchased the car knowing it was a special paint tag car, but at the time of purchase it had no real bearing on the sale...he simply liked the car. The car was purchased from a guy in Finksburg, MD.

The current owner is not a Corvette enthusiast....trust me when I say this.

It was only during his effort's to restore the car ("to his like'en") and in talking with a local, so called "Corvette Expert" on how to paint the car correctly, that the significance of the special paint tag took on a whole new meaning. Bottom line... I believe him, because he believes it. If, you would talk to him you would understand. All or most of the information he is stating is coming from, the behind the scene local corvette expert (whom is located in New Oxford, PA...with a first name of Mike).

As for paying more or less for the car, well...thats up to the buyer...NOM, N.O. HOOD, N.O. EXHAUST, No other Documentation....The interior has been redone. This work and the paint prep is where the current owner lost interest. He did mention that the frame had been placed on a lift and inspected, again by the local Corvette expert... whom said it was sound. He was just recently made aware of the build sheet location, but does not know if it is there...but it does have the original gas tank.

I have no real interest in this car, other than its novelty....If, one were to restore it back to original, it would look very similar to the Black one posted within this thread earlier, as this is a L-48 base motor Vin.

One last point....The current owner, had he painted the car, was going to paint it Tropical Blue...think back to the two tone 55 Chevy's...that shade of blue!

So, to sit here and hypothesize, conspire therories and or other...is totally up to the future posters to this thread. I'm done.

Stay in tune....

Ironically, this car would be one of the LEAST desirable from an NCRS judging perspective as the car would have to be shown in primer or have iron-clad documentation that it was painted black at the factory and not the dealer.

I am the owner of the 73 Corvette for sale on Craigslist. I was told by corvette association to remove the trim tag and see if it was black underneath and if it was it was more then likely one of the original black cars. If anyone has any other questions feel free to ask me. I'd be more then happy to answer.

Here are pictures of the same car taken 3 years ago. I bought another Vette from the same seller. I don't know him well, but I believe that he is telling the truth as far as he knows it. As said, without further documentation it would be hard to verify the authenticity of the car's color. At the time, he was not trying to sell this car, but we talked and he told me the story about the special paint tag. He had plans to build the car himself. I see he found sidepipes and media blasted the paint.

The Corvette Black Book says perhaps thirty '73s got factory black paint. Trim tags had not yet been attached when these cars were painted. None of them should show evidence of exterior color. I took the trim tag off my '68 when I painted her.

If memory serves, 75 or 76 was the first year for painted trim tags.

Mike,

Yeppers, thats what the Black book say's...In the photo's prior to media blast, its apparent the car has seen at least one repaint in its lifetime and this has been admitted / stated by the owner...hence the paint on the trim tag.
