RPM air gap intake under stock hood?
Is anyone running the performer rpm air gap intake under a stock hood?
I have the 73-76 style hood on my car at the moment and and curious will that intake fit or will I need to leave the hood unlatched...

That is the same "basic" hood on my car at the moment,
Leaving the hood "popped" didnt matter to me but the fellow doing my engine work seemed to believe that the air gap would not fit under a vette...it's better new that it will fit....

Dual Quads
I put an Edelbrock Air Gap manifold with dual quads on my 1978 Pace Car. I had to mill 7/16" off the top of the manifold. Then I had to replace the 2 1/2" high air cleaner with 1 3/4" K&N air cleaners. Then I had to make a recessed stud hole flat top for the air cleaner (which I engine turned) I now have clearance that I am conforable with. The finished installation presents itself very well. It helps being G/M of a large tool & die campany when you have a project like this.

Guys...my engine builder who has great wisdom building engines...insists that no way will the Edelbrock RPM performer Air gap with Holley 600 fit under my hood...
I plan to change this whole front clip, I told the builder I don't care if you have to leave the hood popped open...just do it...
My hood is not latched in the picture...can you guys that have this intake please take pictures of engine then hood closed....
Many thanks!

Here is a Performer Air Gap in my 70 with a drop base air cleaner and I had hood clearance. Not much but I had clearance.

I ran an Air Gap in mine when I was running the small block in my 70. The 70 does not have a cowl at all. Here are some pics of when I was checking hood clearance. I had clearance but not much.

I have a performer intake and an eldebrock 600. 2 1/2 air cleaner with no clearance issues. I had a holly 600 with a 1/2 spacer and that was a pretty tight fit. I even have the hood insulation in. I am not using a drop base air cleaner.

my exp
I Have a 75 with stock hood, running a Perf. rpm with stock Quad. I have gone to a smaller filter and a drop base. I would have to measure as I dont remember the sizes on base and filter. I also replaced the motor mounts with the Poly ones. With the drop base and smaller filter my hood will close, but you can see on the hood where it does rub. I believe the air gap sits even higher than the Perf. RPM. I started to order an airgap but saw a warning that there might be clearance issues. I think you will have issues with it fitting, but depending on some of the other variables involved it might fit.

Thanks Eddie
G'day,
I have an Edelbrock Air Gap to fit to my small block '74 and don't have an original Air Cleaner assembly, so have no qualms about buying an aftermarket AC, as long as I have hood clearance!! Thanks to your photos, I can proceed with caution.
I will be using the Qjet and have a question that I have not seen raised before. Is there enough length in the pump-to-carb fuel line to "finesse" it a little to allow for the higher mounting position of the carb with the new manifold? I figure that there is, just wanted to be sure.

Melting Slicks
I have the Performer RPM Air Gap on my '79 with a Holley Avenger carb and a Moroso open element 14" x 3" air cleaner. I have 3/8" insulator and an aluminum heat deflector plate as well. All this was done to cure a heat soak problem with a lower manifold, drop base air cleaner, and stock hood. Bottom line is this setup will not fit under the stock hood. I put on an aftermarket hood which is 2' taller than stock. It looks great and it all fits.

A big old thanks to Eddie 70 for the great pictures,
I fully believe that the Edelbrock AG RPM fits under Eddies hood and the hood of dgood and others,
However am I the only one confused at why it will in turn NOT fit under some peoples stock hoods????

Some folks drop base may not be as much as mine is. I don't know exactly how much my drop is off the top of my head. I could go measure it tomorrow evening and post back.

There is a Performer Air Gap & high rise Performer RPM Air Gap.
Some pics. were posted showing a stock type setup on the 76 & another setup on the 74 in this topic.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...old-vette.html
Note the height of the air cleaner on the 74 compared to the dist. That's about the height of the RPM setup on mine which has the chrome dist. shield on (so that one is more helpful).
There needs to be at least about 3/4" clearance over the Holley vent tubes.
One should consider the entire flow path.
So the high rise RPMs do not work well w/ the low 68-72 std. hoods which is why the LT1/BB hood was used for minimum clearance.
The 73-79 med. rise hood allows a performance setup w/ the RPMs & others on SB w/ aftermarket dropbase filter & Holley. With the high rise under the med. rise hood the lowest point is at the front.

71 SM w/ Stock Hood
I recently added the RPM Airgap to my 71 SB and with a 2" Filter, with Drop Base, the top of the filter hit the choke tower on my Holley DP 650. Instead of buying a new hood, I purchased from Summit Racing the ProForm center section that turns your 650 into a 750, with no choke tower. This gave me a bit more potential power and allowed for my Drop Base Filter (still only 2") to fit under the hood. Where there's a will, there's a way!
FWIW - The RPM AirGap took advantage of the Cam and Aluminum Heads I have and made a world of difference throughout the RPM Range...prior to this, I had an Edelbrock Performer...it was simply choking the car.

Couple of new pics I just snapped. It may add to the threads information. I am running an LT1/BB hood on my car. I am no longer running this motor though.
Didn't know I had a fuel leak up front either.
