I struck out yesterday at the two pawn shops that are local to me. Neither had a vise. We even went to a flea market and hit a couple of tool vendors. Nothing there either. One however did say he had some USA made vises at home and he would bring them down today if I wanted to come back. I may ride back down there and see what he brings in.

Well I went back down to the flea market and asked the guy if he had found the vises and he said he could not locate them in his barn. He said he did however bring a truckload of junk back to the flea market today. He told me he know someone with a vise they were wanting to sell and he would contact them and see if he could get it there next weekend.
Don't know if I will go back on that goose chase or not. Hmmm
Does Kurt or Palmgren make bench vises? I've been very happy with the Kurt on my Bridgeport and the Palmgren vises I've used on my drill press, but I can't remember seeing a bench vise from them.
I have two vises for sale ,,high end and midrange price,,,one is a new 5 inch wilton machinist vise that I never mounted, still bolted to piece of plywood used for shipping,,it does have very fine surface rust from Houston humidity but will clean up with oiled fine steel wool,,,the other is an excellent shape wilton USA made 5 inch Columbian line vise ,,will try to add pics,,,500.00 for the new one,,150.00 plus shipping for the other[IMG]duallydondon@verizon.net
I need a vice also. I plan to build a sturdy work bench and want a nice vise to bolt to the end of it. I guess I will not be buying from Lowes or H Depot based on what I have read.
I used my ol mans vice which is older than dirt when I did my build. I used it all the time, which makes me think I need to have one that will last me a lifetime if I plan to continue tinkering with cars.

I wound up picking up a vice at a yard sale. It is an old Columbian No. 504 and is a dandy. I got it for $30 and thought it was a screaming good deal. I just need to refinish it someday. For now it is mounted on my bench and is doing a good job.

These China made products are hit or miss. Ive got a BIG vise, bought it at at carpentry store a while back. Obviously Chinese made based on the cheap white cardboard packaging. Ive beaten the living hell out of this vice....Ive used it to press in bearings and several large bushings. I even use it, routinely, to press barrel pins out of AK-47's. (I build em frequently) BBL pins are usually pressed in and out with 2 ton hydraulic presses.
Unfortunately, I cracked my Dads Craftsman (probably 25 years ago....) while trying to bend a brass rod.....
WILTON! just make sure it's not one of their "new" made in China economy line of vises. The USA stuff is the best. Years ago I bought a Record brand vise from Lowes that was made in England also very good quality but, they stopped carrying them along with the Williams forge tools they once had (Williams also forges for Snap-on.)
I know it is really late to reply to this thread, but I recently got a Yost 865-DI from Northern Tool and that was made in the USA. It is really useful. It's not as big as a Wilton C-2 but it gets the job done for me.
