Default 1979 speedo cable location

I need the location of the routing for the upper speedo cable with cruise. I need to know where the hole in the firewall is located where the speedo cable goes. The FSM and Assembly manual are any help. Any chance someone could post a photo or discribe where the hole is located. I have four speed car and the cable routing different spots than auto cars with cruise.. Thanks

It's right behind the speedometer.

on my 79 with no cruise it goes thru the firewall at a hole next to the master cylinder facing the passenger side. Don't know if that helps or not.

I thought that the cables routed the same on automatic and 4 speed cars. The Chevy parts book only lists one upper and one lower cable for all 78-82s with criuse. The parts book makes no mention of usasge for a particular transmission. On the 80-82 it comes through the firewall to the left of the brake booster. I'm pretty sure the location is the same in 79. There is a recess in the firewall, left of the hood latch, the hole is directly under that recess, facing forward. The cruise transducer should be about 6" forward of the hole. I don't have a 79 assembly manual, but the 81 shows only one location for the routing of the upper cable for all transmissions.

The assembly manual shows a different firewall location for auto and manual cars without cruise. The auto with cruise is different from the non cruise cars.

So under the driver hood latch outside of booster ? Sounds like the booster may need to come out to drill this hole,,,,,,fun times. Maybe i can do it from inside of the car...thanks

Yes, the cable will come out at a different location in the firewall, on a car with cruise than it does on a car without cruise, and cruise was ONLY available with an automatic in 79. I don't recall if the cable for a non cruise automatic exits the firewall at the same spot as on a 4 speed in 79.

The hole for the cable with cruise may be in your firewall already, with a plug or cap on it. Often, all the holes are in the firewall and Chevrolet just used plugs, like the floor plugs, to seal the unused holes. One example was the clutch rod hole in automatic cars. On mid years, a plastic floor plug was stuck in the hole, in later years a plate was screwed over the hole. Either way, the clutch rod hole still existed in the automatic cars, it was just covered or plugged.

I've got a firewall back 1980 clip, at my shop, that was in a fire. It had cruise, and though burned, whats left of the speedo cable is still in the firewall. I'll try to remember to take the camera to work with me tomorrow and post a picture of it's location.

A photo would be great. The car is a four speed car that had cruise installed and I want to reinstall the cable in the correct spot to elimanated speedo bounce. While I have the engine out will be a good time to access it. thanks....

Thanks guys, the hole was already there. It was filled in with body filler or panel adheasive and not a plug. It was sanded and painted but you could see the outline, just punched it out. Simple fix, now hust have to rerpair the old hole.
