Default Help me find this piece please !

Corvette owners !

I have an 1980 vette.
Working on the rear suspension and while dismantling the spring I unscrewed an aluminium shield(poor shape) from under the differential.
This thin shield is approx a foot square in size and I think its purpose is to prevent the heat from the exhaust.
While back I saw it in a corvette catalog or maybe a website.
Now I want to order it and can't seem to find it.

Can anyone help me out ? What is it called ?
Post a picture or a website address so I can send it to my local corvette supplier.

Thanks all !
Hey ! Spring is here. Here in Canada, last year I had 6ft of snow on each side of my driveway. Now, its grass waiting to go green !

Yep. It's a heat shield. AIM shows it and lists the original part number. Can you use the one you have?

Sorry but what is "AIM".

I can still use mine but its in poor shape. I'm not sure what happened but there's a few holes. Possibly because the previous owner "bottomed out"....

What is the proper name for it ?
Part number ?

Using the "search" on several corvette sites is giving me no results !

I didn't put mine back in and it has not been as issue. It is sitting in a pile of other parts that are no longer used.

AIM is the Assembly Instruction Manual. The workers used these on the assembly line. All the vendors sell them. It contains all the diagrams for the major assembly components.

The Corvette Central catalog calls it "Rear spring plate" p.165
PN: 583005 18.50. It appears to have 3 bolt holes.
Hope this helps and I gave you the correct info.

Glenn, I don't think that is the piece he is talking about. The one he is talking about is bigger than that I think. I remember the piece he is talking about, it is a really thin heat shield looking piece. I did not reinstall mine, it is different than the rear spring plate. I can't find it in any of the catalogs, I have been looking just to see if I could find it and so far nothing.

The GM part number maybe 14030189 or 14030490, though I am not sure on that. Doing a search for those didn't get me much either.

Rear Y pipe heat shield. ZIP Products lists one for an '81; might be the same as an '80.

Order a 1980 assembly instruction manual. AIMs are worth their price.

Nope, that ain't it either....

I remember the piece looking more like this in shape at least. At least the piece I think he is referring too.

I realize that but it is more along that shape as I recall. The piece I listed is from a 68-69 only model. You are looking for a silver piece that is about 1x1 foot roughly correct? You guys are gonna make me take a picture of this thing aren't you?

The partr number at Corvette Central is 323205 and there is a pic of it.

Is it the same part number for 77? I have a very nice one that I took off my car when I installed the side pipes.

1981 rear y pipe heat shield EX-540 catalogue page says not picture available.

http://www.zip-corvette.com/ProductDetails/ProductDetails.aspx?pid={52741bf8-1d54-4c27-87a4-34f1945d79bf}&pname=81+Rear+Y-Pipe+Heat+Shield&Referer=QUICK_SEARCH&Al ias=1981%20rear%20y%20pipe%20heat%20shie ld&ptct=BS-SR&CTitle=&

Link may not work, but you can cut and paste it.

Order the 1980 AIM. Check the exhaust section in the AIM and get the correct part number for the 1980 piece. I'm guessing there isn't much difference between the 80 and the 81 shields.

The y pipe shield is definitely not what you are looking for. I can't believe this thing is not in any catalog I look at. I am confident we are talking about the same piece. You can get by without it, it is just a shield, mine was so covered in thick oil and grease I didn't reinstall it. Gerry72 was part of that rear end reinstall and didn't seem worried about it not being put back. He knows more about Vettes and cars in general than I ever will......

Checked my AIM: GM #475340 heat shield UPC 8C sheet 5 (page 431 in my AIM).

Post a pic of the piece you removed.

That is the heat shield to keep the rear fiberglass spring form absorbing all the exhaust heat and failing. My 82 does not look like that one, but it does the same thing.

No fiberglass springs on the 80 models, but they had the heat shield. Catcon also has one over the top of it. Front Y pipe has a pair.

AIM shows all of them and lists the original part numbers.

Come to think of it, my 80 is not exactly like that one either but that is the location I think we are all talking about. I believe mine is more square and doesn't have that "u" bend in it.
