Fuel pump problem with my 77 Corvette. Help please?
So a few days ago my brother in law was driving my Corvette and it just stalled in the middle of the road. We thought that the alternator may have died, so we took it and the battery in. They both failed so I replaced both. The problem persisted, so I figured it might be the fuel filter. It wasn't clogged. I then decided the fuel pump was probably bad and replaced it. That did not fix the problem, so I manually tried to suck the fuel straight up and fuel wasn't coming. I then noticed a red canister in the middle of the fuel line going into the carburetor. There was another fuel filter located inside and it was clogged. I replaced it and can now manually pull fuel through the hose. However, when I start the car, fuel is not being pumped to the carburetor. Could the brand new pump I just installed be bad? Or could it be something else?
Did you prime the carb- fill the carb w/ gas through the vent tube.
There is an ig. module inside the dist. that can cut out/quit. If you don't know how old it is, replace ig. module & you can keep the old one as a spare.

I primed the carb and filled the tube with gas. I didn't check the ig module though. Didn't even think about it. I'll try that. Thanks!
This may be a dumb question. But did you make sure the piston in the block that hits the lever on the pump is in tacked? How did you get it to stay up during your install?
I had a 77. I recall the first pump I bought was the wrong one. The piston did not make contact with the pump. I then bought the right pump and installed it but used the screw at the front of the block to hold the piston up and for got to loosen it once I had the pump in.

Yeah, the piston seems to be in god condition. I had to remove the plate the the pump is installed over and push the rod up and hold it there while I positioned the pump. If anything, I think that the rod may not be positioned correctly. I'll probably end up removing the pump and checking the rod's position again.

Thanks for the advice. Haven't gotten it running yet. Will work on it a little later and update.
Thanks everyone for your input. I realigned the fuel pump and it works fine now. I think the problem was originally the filter and I just didn't install the pump right when I put it in. Thanks again.
