Default Correct me if I am wrong......

Hi Guys,

Hey Correct me if I am wrong, But I know I am not.
The first true Two Tone Paint job was not done at factory until the 1981 model year, and was late in the production run, due to the fact that the Bowling Green Plant was the only plant that did a two tone paint. and the Bowling Green plant did not come online until June of 1981.

The reason this comes up is this listing on ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT

This guy swears this is the Orig paint except for the hood. I have a problem with this since it is a 1980 St.Louis car, so how would it have a two tone Orig paint job from the factory????

Something smells on this one.

Mike.

I was under the impression that the first factory two tone paint job was in 1956.

OK, I will go along with you on those listed. but here is what I was referring to. The 78 edition was not the base model, by this the two tone paint was not a option /or avail until 81.

1981
Two tone paint scheme is available for the first time since 1961 (Bowling Green cars).
Fiberglass-reinforced composite monoleaf rear springs is introduced (A/T).
Power drivers seat (6-way) available.
IGN interrupt added to anti-theft system.
New enamel base with clear topcoats.
Color keyed H/L and W/W switch bezels match interior.
Delco Electronically Controlled Radio (ETR).
Quartz clock standard.

we continue the history of the Corvette with a summary of the 1981 highlights.

Total production was 40,606 coupes, of which production was split between St. Louis (31,611) and the new plant in Bowling Green, Ky. which began production in June 1981 (8,995). Key facts were:

* All two tone Corvettes were painted at the new location in Bowling Green.

Not true. Two tones were produced at St. Louis in the late spring of '81 before Bowling Green opened.

Here's how: There were eighty 1980 St. Louis cars painted two tone as part of the pilot two tone paint project. All of these cars show an E in the exterior paint code on the trim tag. All were acrylic lacquer and all were shipped to GM at Warren for evaluation. The NCRS Judging Guide mentions these cars. To my knowledge, none of the E code cars has surfaced, but GM did something with them after the paint process was evaluated. It's possible he has one. VIN 1Z878AS414783 was assembled in January, 1980.

I'd kill to see the Trim tag.

Ah, OK this makes sense. Thanks for the very detailed reply. I was going off all the info I had ever seen, and all pointed toward the two tones being made in Bowling Green. Very Interesting.
Thanks, Mike.
