Default Front clip question

I have read a few posts on front clips, however I still have a question. I have some rust issues on the windshield frame, so I believe that I am going to have to remove the clip do do some reparing under where the fender covers the bird cage. Can't see it very well but am pretty sure from looking at the windshild frame that it will need work. I was wondering if it was possible to remove the front clip while attached to the fire wall? Or do you have to remove the fenders from the fire wall and then remove the fire wall? I was hoping to remove the whole thing together and then just reinstall the whole thing, but I have never had one off before. Any help as always would be very appriciated.

If you have to remove the front clip you dont have to remove the firewall.you can get to the top of bird cage by removing the fender mounting tabs their held on with 3 rivets and some seam sealer.check these pics 72 same as 69 I just did my whole cage. http://photobucket.com/bertpayne

but if you're birdcage is in such bad shape that you need to remove the front clip you may find yourself removing the firewall as well. Certainly start by removing the front clip and then, once you've had a better look, you can determine whether the firewall needs to be removed as well. I've got a bunch of photos up on my website if that helps, see my sig for the link.

Either way it's a heck of a lotta work, but totally do-able. Good luck!

So are you guys saying it is best not to remove the firewall if I don't have to? The concern I have is how stable the front clip is when not attached to the fire wall. I don't want to break the front of it. I was thinking if I could remove it in one piece I wouldn't have to mess with lining the 2 pieces back up, and it would be stronger when not on the car. If I have to separate them anyway, I think I can get by without taking the firewall off. I am just concerned about the area just below the windshield. And if I just take the clip off, does the piece at the back of the hood separate from the firewall with a putty knife? is it just glued? what are the chances of breaking it when I remove it? I've not had one off before but have worked on cars a lot. I think I can do it, just not done it before.
