Default Side Mounted Exhaust

Guys, I got a great deal on a complete side mounted exhaust system today. It's black, but that's what I wanted because I hate it when the chrome headers and pipes start to rust. I got the complete system for $100. They need to be repainted and I am planning on working on them next weekend. I was just about to order a pair of side mounted headers a couple of days ago. Good thing I waited. I also went and picked up a performer intake as well. I can't wait to get the Vette up and running. I'm planning on getting it finished by May, with the help of my brother, so I can start hitting some car shows.

Sounds like you scored a great deal.I wonder if you could get them ceramic coated black so they would hold up to the heat and elements a little better.Maybe powder coated? Does anybody have a similar item that has been powder/ceramic coated to compare with for durability?

I've been thinking the same thing. I'm going to have to look into something like that.

JetHot coats these, if it's solid enough. Their Sterling finish is very nice. It won't discolor but will chip. Keeps some of the heat out of the engine bay too.

That would be nice, but I don't feel like shipping these things. I think I'm just going to have to get them sand blasted and either paint them, or figure something else out. Do you guys think powder coating will hold to continues exhaust temperatures?

Yes, powder coating will hold to extreme temps MUCH better than paint will. There are multiple types of powder coating - one is for higher temp applications such as exhaust.

I just had my headers done recently. It was an aluminized powder that came with a basic flat gray color - However if you take and lightly polish it with steel wool it comes out to the same finish as polished aluminum - and that was a cheap setup (around $50 bucks to have done). Other places such as jet hot have a wider selection of the coatings that can be used, but for the rinky-dink local shop I used, they did an awesome job.

This is what I am talking about - I took a pic in between polishing them.

I had pulled them off and painted them with a grey VHT color and that flaked off after a couple of months.

They look good. I'm going to have to look for a local shop that can powder coat these things.
