Default New Crate Motor Question......

I got a new 350/300HP crate motor a few months ago. Today I just got it on my motor stand. I went to put on a new oil filter and there is no place to screw the filter into the housing. There is a cast housing where the filter goes but when you look up into the housing there is no threaded piece sticking down to screw the filter to and the hole that is there is not threaded. I know now that I need to buy something to put there because there is 2 small threaded holes up in the housing. My question is what is the part that I need called? Is it a filter housing? Thanks.

I had to buy one for my Suburban a few years ago when I removed the oil cooler that it came with from the factory. I went to the local salvage yard and took one off a motor.
I looked it up at Autozone: oil filter adaptor

This is what you are looking for, minus the little plate spacer.

Oil filter mount, or oil filter adapter is what it is called

Thanks guys,

Mikejpss: I already gave away the old motor. I got a 350/300HP from Pace Performance and it was $2,200 delivered.

Gordom, thanks now I know what to call it. I got the motor 6 months ago and never realized it had no adaptor.

redwingvette; thanks for the info, I have an Auto Zone about 5 miles from my house.

I could never figure out why GM does not put those adapters on any of their crate engines. Is it a cost saving or what? My ZZ4 never came with one either but the dealer threw one in.

Richard, when I got my then 260hp 350 motor from Pace Performance(the one in Niles, Ohio)5yrs ago for my '75 coupe, I kept the original L-82 motor and had to take the filter adapter off of it and put on the new motor. Sold the car 3/24 but haven't got the original L-82 & Turbo 400 over to the new owner's house yet.

I have a ZZ4 engine and it's about time for me to change the oil. It has a standard oil filter position, so is it a safe bete to think that it will use a typical GM filter for 350 SB?

I'm on the fence about if I should go for the long filter or the short filter. If it was a DD, I'd buy the long filter in a heartbeat but since this is a show car, it really doesn't need a long filter.

I plan to change the oil every 6 months with synthetic oil. What weight do you use? I was thinking about 5W-30. Sorry that I'm hijacking this thread for these questions but I don't think I need to open a new thread for these questions.

Thanks for any info.

And the thread is returned back to the OP.

I use the long Delco filter. I don't think it makes a particle of difference with the oils we have today. I use Pennzoil 10W30 and have been using it for many many years.
