It's a little late to be checking numbers if you already bought the car?!?!?!?!
Anyway, the engine pad should be stamped to match VIN, pad is at the front of the passenger head, part of the block jutting out. Should match VIN and tell you engine size and use, and build date. Buy a book on Camaros and go from there..............don't really know what else to say.....................Maybe join a Camaro forum!?!?!?!!?

Well thanks.. I hope I didnt really offend anyone asking about a camaro...In a vette forum... Is that a NO NO!?!?!? I figure an old camaro and old vette, its the same with the numbers...I joined this forum because I have a vette , now I may have to look for a camaro forum for my camaro questions. I thought it was a simple question, So SORRY to take up Space!

NO its not too late in asking just because I bought it!!!!!.. The car was practically GIVEN to me and im just COURIOUS if the engine and tranny match the car... I would have got the car with or W/O the drivetrain, You probably couldnt have got a parts junker car cheaper....

Would you buy a 67 rolling chassis vette for 1700, with another ,whos knows how much ??? in extra parts, or worry about the engine/tranny matching???? I could double my money on this car W/O engine a tranny..

Sorry , I just took it as kind of a smart *** response, thanks for the info though.

even if the numbers match the vin derivative, that really means nothing, you have to check the stamp pad itself for finish, and check the characters for correct fonts and spacing, and check the block and parts cast dates and make sure all the dates line up, and several other criteria... numbers matching does not mean much anymore if you interpret it to mean the characters stamped match the vin derivative.. anyone can do it and fool most of the people with a harbor freight stamp kit.

No, here's the smart *** remark............Seeing how you divulged more info like you also have a Vette, and Camaros were old too, and the rambling above................................... .I would imagine basic knowledge of numbers should be known. But Camaro codes are different from every other car, so once again, buy a book or go to a Camaro forum, maybe they have thicker skin than me.........................

Here is a link to a good site that explains numbers very well, and the locations to find those numbers.
Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your Camaro.

http://www.mortec.com/location.htm

Don't be put off by negative comments here, were not all like that.

I have a '73 Z28 also so I don't mind replying.

Hopefully you have an MP or MO engine code (302)

Post a picture of your trim tag (from the cowl) and I can decode it for you.
