I saw the intrinsic value to this forum many years ago and that made it quite clear to me that it was something I wanted to be apart of. Over the years, it has paid for itself many times over.
Well except for one bad experience from a vile and dishonest non-supporting vendor a long time ago.
You can pay to be a Supporting Member but I think it'd be forum suicide to charge everybody.

I gladly pay 25 wing ***** a year for this forum.
I think the problem would be that if we were forced to pay $25, a large group would walk away, many of those who offer a lot of that valuable information.
After a while all those questions that aren't answered by looking in the Black Book would result in an empty crickets sound and the Forum wouldn't seem like such a great value after all.
You should put your words in context. I doubt that most members received an e-mail. Did you? What is the source of your comment? Cut and paste it.
I did receive an e-mail recently as a continuing Supporting Member as I have in former years. And yes I did re-new.
Sometimes I wonder about the innuendo floating about this Forum. It is certainly a very different place than in the past.
My local GM dealer has a labor rate of $105.00/hr. Compare that to the Forum. For $25.00/year I figure the (valid) tech support given here recoups that expenditure in less than a week.
Haven't seen one either, who started this, where did it come from, Phil did you get a notice?
I must apologise, I think after tooooooooooooooo many brewskys last night I must have placed my mouse where it didn't belong, and did not read the fine print.
Will say one thing though, I got more replies from this thread than I usually do.

By the way (This Forum Rocks)
No problem. This is a very useful source of knowledge on these old cars. Just one good tip from Lars and others is worth $25.00/year for me. I will be doing some carb replacement tomorrow and I know from experience that I will do something wrong. It's nice to get advice - even sympathy - here.
