I have been out in my shed all afternoon trying to get my harmonic balancer on my new crate motor. It goes on the shaft easy enough but I am not sure how far opn it should go. I have it on with the hub facing the motor and I am using the balancer bolt to push it on with and there is no problem with that. My problem is that the original blot has bottomed out in the crank shaft and the balancer is not all the way back to the block, there is anout 5/16 of an inch before the back of the balancer hits the timing chain cover. There is also 1" before the crankshaft end comes flush with the balancer front side. I cannot get the balancer any farther on the crank because the mounting bolt has bottomed out in the crank. I hope someone can understand what I am talking about. Is this is far as it is supposed to go on? I took it apart 4 years ago and cannot remember. Thanks.
Thanks everyone, does anyone know how close the balancer comes to touching the timing chain cover? Right now its 5/16th of an inch from the back side of the balancer to the timing chain cover. Again, thanks.
I took the old motor our 4 years ago and did not take any notes because I was going to get a new crate motor right away, yea.
I remeber having the same problem last fall during my assemble. Come to find out, it was on all the way, I just didn't remember. I snapped off the bolt. Check with a local mechanic. Your probably OK.
I don't even see how you could try to install it on your new crate motor w/o the proper tool. With the tool, you know it's on all the way. borrow one or buy one. Summit has a decent one for around 65 bucks, works on all the big 3.
Here are pics from 2 different engines with stock cover and balancer.
Measure the distance on the crank id to the bolt washer mating face on the balancer to get the length you need and check with the length of the bolt. Torque on the bolt will go up instantly when the balancer is seated. Anywhere around 100lbs and you're home.
