Can't seem to figure this out. Normally I don't get THIS frustrated, but I had to back away from this today.
If someone had a pic showing the area containing the switch, sidecover, and shift rods, I'd be VERY grateful! I am using the diagram on page J398 in my AIM...it looks pretty obvious, but something just isn't adding up.
I can't understand the orientation of the switch and the rod. I think I tried every position possible, and either the rod is too long to attach it to the switch and the reverse lever, or the switch will hit against the levers on the side cover. I am flying blind here...the car didn't have any of this installed on the trans when I bought it.
Thanks Eddie. Thats exactly what I need. Does your bracket just bolt to the sidecover with one bolt, with the tang holding it still? That is much roomier looking than what I was trying to do.
It looks like I was trying to put on the wrong switch/bracket. Bought the assembly at Carlisle last fall from a big vendor of used parts
So, is this a newer/different vette part, or something completely different?

As best as I can remember that looks exactly like the switch that I had. It has been a while so my memory may be a little fuzzy. I have seen some better pics of the switch setup on here and hopefully someone will chime in with some better ones. Mine is a 70 by the way.

You have the switch shield, the previous guy with the pics looks like it's missing. With the shield things get crowded fast.................
You are right, mine did not have the shield on it.
So, should what I have bolt up?
Eddie, if you installed yours w/o the shield, how did you secure it to the trans? My switch looks like it screws to the shield, which bolts to the transmission.
I just noticed in the links that my shield IS a 74 up shield, which is different than a 64-73 shield. But, should it make any difference in assembly?

Reason: add info
i just got done late winter adding back up lights to my car, the switch was not even there also I had to buy it all, the little rod did not even fit and I had to fabricate a coat hanger wire of the right length, finally got it to work.. but it was a major pain as I have a super T10 and not a muncie. the reverse shift rod was on backwards and I had to turn it around, then the shifter was out of adjustment so I had to make a longer shift rod for the tranny reverse shifter linkage.. ( muncie shifter linkage on a super t10 tranny). then a little tool to line up neutral on the shifter..it just snowballed all to heck... but finally got it to work and it looks and works nice...
can't really describe to you how to mount it up.. I do know it will only go on one way and the little rod will only work and attach one way also
Do a search for backup light switch. GD70 had some good pics of when he installed his, and I referenced them when I installed my switch just teh other month. I had to enlarge the slots and bend the rod to make mine work properly. I must have taken the switch on and off 50 times making slight adjustments each time till I finally got enough adjustment to get the switch to kick the lights off. I got very frustrated several times and just had to walk away.
Here's the link.
It's a very easy job. You'll need to remove one of the shifter levers to make some working room. The main switch bracket mounts to the tranny. You need to pull the two bolts out of the tranny to mount the bracket.
When I positioned the switch on the bracket, I centered the screws in the elongated slots as a start point. Ended up working properly and no more adjustment was necessary. Just be careful not to loose those small clips for the rod. The wires should face rearward when you mount the switch.
