You should get the correct mirror, and fill the hole. That is about all you can do.

I want to use the originals, already have them in boxes, but the body shop says something about them not fitting correctly because there is no backing plate to mount them to. I will have to visit them again and tell them to make the original style work that belong on the car.

That mirror looks like it may be from a Ford?

What your body shop is talking about is the nut plate that should be in the drivers side door. This is just what it sounds like, a plate with 2 nuts attached to it that is bonded into the drivers side door. All 68 to 76 Corvettes (and 77-79 with the standard chrome mirror) had this plate in the drivers door.

Passenger side mirrors used 2 "Wellnuts" to attach the mirror to the door. Wellnuts are rubber grommets that have a brass thread in them. You drill a hole in the door, press the Wellnut into the hole and when you screw a screw into it, it pulls up tight like a drywall anchor.

Wellnuts can be used in the drivers side door to replace a missing nut plate. The mirror Wellnuts can be gotten from most Corvette parts vendors. Wellnuts can be bought at auto parts stores and probably hardware stores like Lowes, too. I would think that your body shop should be familiar Wellnuts, but if not, tell them to look into them!

Do you trust these folks? Are they a Corvette shop? Seems to me Corvette shops would know the mounting plate is in the driver's door as GBVETTE posted.

They are not a vette shop. It is a Chrysler body shop that I have used many times on my other cars. I went back today and told them I want to use the original and he said ok no problem. He really did not want to have to sand fill and paint holes but being that it was his fault they are going to take care of it and use original parts I gave them.
