The leather on my steering wheel is shot and I was wondering if anyone knew another way to recover it. I hate to spend $200 for a new one, but I don't want to put on one of those covers from the local auto store.
There use to be a couple companies that recovered the 77-82 wheels, but I don't know if any are around anymore. The $200 repro wheels have just about killed the recovering business. The cost to recover them was more than what the new wheels cost and you don't have the hassle of paying a core charge and/or having to ship the old wheel back.
Corvette America use to list recovering in their catalog, but I'm pretty sure they only list recovering for the 84 up wheels now. I think Al Knoch did it to in past, too. You may want to check with CA and Knoch, they probably still can do it, but I think you'll find it costs more than a new wheel.
You may want to check with some local auto upholstry shops. Most good auto uphosterers should be able to do it.
I had mine redone 3 years ago by Chuck Pelton-4984 Leroy Ct. West Bloomfield, MI 48324. Tx#248-681-4336. The cost then was $170 plus shipping($10) and a $75 core chg. He did a great job- done in the dark blue for my '82'. I don't know if he is still in business.
