I just got a 72 project car. I'm looking things over and learning a new car. The bumpers have brackets with nuts on the back of them. Is there a way to replace those nuts?
Do you mean the nuts that are welded on to various brackets? You can always grind them off and weld on new ones, but it might be a lot easier to just get some thread chasing taps and run them though the existing nuts. If they are totally hogged up you can drill through them and use larger bolts.
The bumpers on a chrome-bumper car don't offer a lot of crash protection to begin with so replacing nuts isn't going to help much from a safety standpoint. If you are doing a NCRS-type restoration then you would want to grind/weld on new nuts.
On the ends of the bumpers are "C" brackets with both ends welded to the bumper. In the middle of that there is a nut welded to the back side of the "C". One of those nut's is gone. I don't see room to weld behind that bracket, just wondered if someone else had already dealt with it. Still learning.
You mean these? Never had to fix one, but it's really tight. Looks like if you use a square nut you could tack it at 2 sides. That's really all it takes.
If the nut is impossible to remove, missing entirely, and cannot be tapped, then buy a hex nut that is correct for the bolt, select a drill with a diameter the size across the points on the nut and drill out the hole. Drive the nut into the hole with a bolt inserted into to nut and then tac weld in in place. Not for NCRS cars but will function properly.
