I think it's a 5/16. The socket I have is a special socket and I don't think it has a size on it but I will look in the morning and see if a 5/16 12 point will fit one of the bolts.
Correction , sorry , its a 1/4" - 12 point . When they went to the aluminum batwing they used several different bolts with varying heads including a torx on some models. The tiny 1/4" ones are pretty easy to round the heads on if your socket isn't sitting square on the head. Clean the 12 point head so the socket sits all the way inside the socket. Go Slow !
Note - The socket I prefer is an Apex 3108-D 1/4 .... the recommended socket is an Apex FC 108K 1/4
the recommended socket is 3/8 drive and has a larger OD but IMO doesn't fit down on the head very well.
my favorite is 1/4" drive and has a scary small OD-it fits perfectly but I doubt it would take careless abuse. I use it very carefully and so far (knock on wood) I haven't broken one yet.
very well explained Roger.
Be careful when reinstalling them. when i Completed my rebuild I snapped the head off one of those little bolts. And of course it had to be the last one. so out it came again. not much fun.

Thanks...probably another reason I feel better using the 1/4" "drive" socket over the larger 3/8 drive.
edit-here is a pic of the 2,the 1/4 drive is the small one.

Wonderful, just wonderful....
Now we're to the point of posting pictures of the size of our "tools".
Got the half shafts off, man those little bolts were a pain. Man those replacement bolts are expensive. Best price I found is $2.50 apeace. Just seems high for one small bolt
