Default carb problems

I'm having a problem with the carb on my 79. It starts up fine but for the first few miles when I accelerate med to hard I get a big stutter a big pop then it takes off. I removed the air filter and gave it gas and a burst of air came out the top, I did it again a little harder and flash of flame came out. I'm not sure what's going on. I rebuild the carb in January but this just started, it goes away after ten minutes of driving. Any ideas where to start.

I would start by making sure the accelerator pump is giving a good squirt and if so, then start looking at the timing.

The accelerator pump is definitely giving a good squirt of gas. Note to self don't look down the carb while giving it gas.

I just set the timing a month ago. I'm gonna check it tomorrow but I would think if the timing was the problem it would always happen. This goes away after a few minutes.

I had the same problem after I rebuilt my carb. I finally figured out that I had bent the arms upwards on my power piston. The needles weren't seating properly, which was letting in too much fuel. The arms need to be perpendicular to the rest of the piston. Hope that helps.

Is your choke working correctly and not opening too soon. It sure sounds like a lean condition.
