Default Mecum Auctions - Question

I watch the auctions every once in a while and wonder why the Mecum guys put their sweaty hands all over these gorgeous classic cars? And sometimes I see them leaning on the roof with their forearms all over it.

The owners wouldn't want anyone doing that at a car show, so why does Mecum do it? Because they can?

I noticed the same thing but I was more concerned about them wearing watches, rings, belt buckles, etc. What about all those people hanging over the car with their bidder badges dangling against the paint while they are looking in through the window with a plastic cup of beer in their hand. They don't handle hoods and trunk lids well either. I saw one Mecum woman open a hood and turn her back on the car. The hood slammed down from full open. She closes the hoods and trunk lids from one corner as the car starts to roll off.

Exactly! It's like antique vehicular assault.

Default Self Important

What gets me is all the self important people who seem to be talking to an absent bidder on a cell phone or the ones who run up to the car with a small flashlight to check underneath & under the hood. If you notice, these guys never bid on anything. Guess they just want to appear important.
Thanks for the rant. Jackie

Don't you get some time to inspect the cars prior to them going up on the block?

Mecum appears to be the Wal Mart of the collector car auction world. But then again they haven't dropped tent poles on anybody's cars yet, at least that I am aware of.

IMO Mecums cars and prices are much more realistic than Barrett-Jackson, who really caters to the middle class beer belly elite, with big inheritence money. Too bad many of those jokers can't fit behind the wheel of the cars that they buy. All bubba can do is stare at that new AC Shelby Cobra that he bought, unless he sits on the back deck and uses a mop handle to work the pedals and steer. Barrett-Jackson is just a distraction from reality, and anyone who thinks their car is worth that is only kidding themselves. Especially in this economy. Most of us could afford a car at Mecums auction, but only watch at Barrett-Jackson. Don't ya just love it as he gets all worked up and applauds like a wind up monkey with cymbals as the prices go up over 6 figures?! Ka-Ching! And if you look closely at his eyes you'll see numbers rolling around, like a slot machine, as his commission fees rack up.
