I have a stock 77 L82 and was wanting to put a round 360 degree air cleaner on but can't find one for a 77. Will one fit and if so which one should I go with? thanks vince
The stock 68-72 14" open element air cleaner should drop right on, along with any number of aftermarket units. The repro OEM ones look great, were designed to work on a Q-Jet and only cost about $100.
I don't know if you'll see any gain in performance by replacing the stock dual feed unit with an open element one, but if your interested in appearence it's the way to go. The original L-82 air cleaner draws cool outside air into the air cleaner. An open element one is going to be breathing the very hot under hood air, especially at the higher temps that the 77 engine runs at. You may find cold start up and run suffers some too, without the stove pipe feeding warmed air to the air cleaner. If you just want to dress things up, you can also by a chrome lid for your stock unit for about $39. I'm not saying don't do it though, many others have and love it.
the look is really cool. was that a picture of an 80 vette and did you make a change with the place where it attched to the fan shroud or what ever that is called.

Nope; stock 69 350hp. The air cleaner will fit your L-82. If memory serves, the snorkel ducting for your L-82 willl come off after you remove the sheet metal screws.
thanks i wasn't sure if it would look and operate ok with the ducting off
You'll be fine. No snorkels or ducting on the earlier cars. The open element air cleaner will be a little louder than the snorkel can, BUT it'll sound good.
From: Arlington Va Current ride 04 vert, previous vettes: 69 vert, 77 resto mod
for what its worth i just went the other way.......from the round open air element unit to the dual snorkle and i can tell the difference in how the car performs. i do have a modifed engine and it really likes the cool air coming in.
you can use the edelbrock filter element from a local auto parts store if you use the black plastic spacer that is available (usually there are 3 in the pack) and cut off the top lip around the front of the carb by the linkage. the base of the air filter will sit on this and life will be good.
