This spring when I took the vette out the drivers side window did not operate. Last summer it worked sporadically. It seemed like if I pressed down on the switch when I tried to lower or raise the window it worked better.
How can I tell if it is a problem with the switch or the motor? I am not much of a electrical guy, so step by step instructions/pictures would be great!
From the way you described "pushing down" on the switch I would say the switch is bad. classic bad switch symptom.
If you want to diagnose you will need a 12v testlight or just switch the wiring from the drivers switch to the passenger and try it.

Thanks for the tip! It is just the switch. Now the hunt is on for a replacement!
I am tackling the same problem today...My passenger side window would roll down but not come back up. There is a slight melting of the harness that attaches the the back of the switch on the window down power side.
I test the passenger window motor and it checks out. Does anyone know where the relay is located so I can check it?

Any help would be appreciated
I believe 78 was the last year with a relay. Usually the melting is from leaving the switch on too long after the window has stopped. For the not coming back up make sure the regulator mounts are not broken causing the motor to bind in the down position.
I tested the window motor by jumping power to each side of the motor. It goes up and down with no problem. I also made a jumper and tested the harness on the back of the switch. even with the jumper the window will go down but not back up.
I may have to play the game "follow the brown wire"
The switches themselves are pretty simple to repair.
They are actually a pretty crude design, simply some copper leaves that contact each other.
Clamp it into a vise and bend up the tabs holding it together. If they break off, no problem, there's plenty of material along each side to restake it back together.
Lift out the insides paying attention to which way things are facing. Put it together 180* off and window will operate "backwards" Don't ask how I know
Lightly sand the burned areas of the copper leaves and put it back together.
With a hammer and screwdriver stake some material along each side to hold it back together.
Your car actually does have a relay but its on the feed side of the switch, I'm just going to guess but toolman might mean to have a relay on the motor side so the switch doesnt take such a heavy load ,you would need 4 relays I think.
