Default Off brand tires?

I need a set of 15" tires. I know there are non-name brand tires available, like my current "Revenger" and "Grand Am" tires, but I can't seem to find any cheap off brands online anywhere. Does anyone still make tires in about size(225 or 235R15 in a 70 or 75 sidewall) that are cheaper than the $85/tire I'm finding? Thanks for the info.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't be putting the cheapest tires I could find on my baby...

You have different things to consider when buying tires, of which one consideration is price. Off brand or private label tires are made by the big boys but sometimes to different standards...better or poorer than the name brands. Learn to read the sidewall ratings on a tire to get a quality comparison...treadwear, traction and temperature ratings.

To get something you usually need to give up something...you want long tread life, you'll likely give up some traction rating, unless you go for the real expensive stuff.

There's also types of tires...performance, super performance, touring tires. You need to determine which suits your driving style and price.

Figure out what exactly suits your needs, THEN go about looking for the best tire at the best price that fits those needs. Anything else and you can be unhappy with your purchase.

There's nothing wrong with private label tires if they meet your needs and cost/benefit analysis. Pep Boys sells their Futura GLE line of performance tires...they're made by Cooper and is the equivalent of the Cooper Cobra...just a slight change in tread pattern but recognizable as the Cobra. I'm not trying to sell you on that tire in particular...just using it for an example.

Determine your needs and then look for the tires that fit that need, then make your decision on which to buy.

Default BFG radial / TA

It is getting hard to find 70 series tires these days! not much in the performance variety. goodyear does make a higher end tire in a 70 series - the Eagle RSA for $129. at Tirerack.

Firestone makes the Firehawk 500 and Goodyear has the other Eagle GT II and BFG Radial TA will be available.

I prefer the look of the BFG, thats what I am replacing now, changing from the 255/60 back to the 225/70 for a better Ride and easier steering!

I ordered 225/70/r15 BFG Radial / TA's from Tirerack back in May. they were Backordered as they were still in production. They finally shipped this last friday, should receive them tomorrow.

price was $78 per tire plus shipping.

Check the speed rating on tires you are considering. I would never consider any tires with less than a 'H' speed rating for my 'vette.

I looked long and hard, 2 years ago, until I found some 'H' rated tires at The Tire Rack - 225-70 15. They are summer only tires, but that is ok since I only drive in the summer.

That works out to 25% off per tire...not a bad deal. What it does is get customers to buy complete sets of tires instead of pairs. Just a way of increasing sales.

Not knocking them for doing it...they can't sell anything if they can't get you to walk through the door. Pep Boys does sell good tires. You just have to do some research and compare and see where the best deal is for the best tires that suit your needs.

I have Mohawk Predators on mine and they are fine. The PO put them on right before I bought so I am just gonna run em, they seem to have no issues at all and Mohawks are reasonably priced.

Mohawk was a well-known "secondary brand" where I live a long time ago, but I didn't know that they were still around.....maybe it's a regional thing.

i know its not the most popular brand, but i go with the junkyard specials. i dont think my dad, or my self, have ever bought a new set of tires.

when i got tires for the vette a few years ago, i got 4 tires that all looked new/very low mileage. 2x avengers (i think), and 2 bfgs, all 4 same size. 4 tires + mounting and balancing for under 75 dollars.

i am not. i took a bit of searching through the tire pile to find hte same tread pattern/size, but i did find them. hell, the bfgs still had the nubs on them, and the avengers werent that much more worn.

in my opinion, a set of sub 500mile tires for $75 mounted and balanced beats the hell out of a set of new tires at 400+ mounting and balancing.

Jeff , I think it depends on your driving style ..if you just cruise and putt around town and are limited on the miles you drive ? cheap tires will probably work for ya .( SAMS , pep girls , Walmarts or Sears usually have pretty good local deals )
My car is all stock ! but I do like hitting the curves at twice the posted limits...!!! Thats why I've started a few threads about better upgraded tires for my car ...
It all depends on how you drive

Buy three get one free at Pep Boys means you will also have to buy their road hazard warranty or no deal.
